 Shape East Education, Youth and Community Workshops
The Shape East Workshops
Bring to life issues of Sustainable Living, Climate Change, Architure, Good Design, Community Planning and more with Shape East's creative education and community team. We have been running a variety of workshops and learning programmes with schools, after school, youth clubs and community groups for over 5 years and cover a range of primary and secondary national curriculum levels and subjects. All workshops can be tailored to suit individual needs, ages and ability.
All of our workshops are carried out by qualified arts practitioners and education providers. All staff carry enhanced CRB checks.

Workshop 1: Modelling the Next Generation

Whether you're transforming a community centre, re-thinking unused green spaces or building a new housing estate, this workshop explores changes in your local area, using model-making, map reading and on-site sessions to engage, excite and empower young people and communities with these plans.
Age: 11 +
Ability Level: All
Brief Outline of Day:
- Interactive presentation with built environment specialist
- Close study session of local area: historical, geographical and cultural
- Creative workshops to explore ideas for the development / local changes
- Presentation of ideas to local decision makers / community
- Question and answer and feedback session
Skills: model making, map reading and historical comparison, architectural and masterplanning drawing, researching, group work, presenting and public speaking,

Workshop 2: Build Me a Town, Build me a Home!

What do children want from the spaces in which they live? This workshop engages children with the spaces and places around them, using supported model making and drawing workshops to explore their new found knowledge and ideas.
Age: 6-11 years
Ability Level: All
Brief Outline of Day:
- Introduction to the local area and ideas sharing session with children
- Workshop on history and geography of local area
- Model making buildings and houses workshop
- Presentation of models to local decision makers, parents and community
Skills: brain storming and creative thinking, model design and making, drawing and labelling, group work,

Workshop 3: Sustainability, Slam Poetry and other Cultures

From green roofs in Brixton to Bogota' bikes, Colombian car bans and sun powered tribes.....! This workshop explores low-carbon living from the UK and beyond, using spoken word poetry sessions to collate and present new found ideas and knowledge.
Age: 11+
Ability Level: All
Brief Outline of Day:
- Interactive group quiz combining poetry and sustainability issues
- Slam poetry performance and feedback
- Rhyming, writing and research workshop: creating poetry from information
- Performance workshop: group and individual poetry as performance
- Final performance to school, community and / or local decision makers
Skills: group and individual research, brainstorming and group writing, creative writing, performance poetry and public speaking
Main Subject Coverage: Geography, English / English Lit, Citizenship, Drama. |

Why are our workshops so successful?
- We use creative and innovative learning methodologies to engage and incite people, including model making and slam poetry.
- We bring in professionals and experts in the built environment through our extensive contacts database. This varies with each workshop but may include designers, architects, eco-architects, planners, public artists and Councillors.
- We include a feedback session in all workshops. This means that we bring in local decision makers such as Councillors and Local Authority staff to listen to the findings, concerns and knowledge of the community group and / or young people. This is a vital aspect of our workshops, paving the way to raise the real-life involvement and voice of communities and young people with changes and developments in their local surrounding
