Working with ‘shape’ and a team of local construction professionals from Coulson Building Group, Whitby Bird structural engineers and breathe architecture, students from Netherhall School & Sixth Form College, Cambridge worked on a submission for the Construction Industry Training Board’s national ‘Creative Spaces’ design competition for 9-14 year-olds. Should the Netherhall scheme win first prize, the students will see £50,000 going towards the construction of their project during the summer holidays later this year !

The imaginative and determined Year 9 students at Netherhall designed ways to convert one of the school’s open-air courtyard areas into an all-weather covered space for the school’s art exhibitions, construction projects, music, dance and other events.
The whole project came about in response to the creativity of Netherhall’s students and their need for more space to exhibit their art, design, technology, dance, and drama work. As well as introducing young people to the professional work of builders, architects and engineers, these workshops created opportunities for the students’ design flair and ability for co-operative working to produce an exciting, viable and above all imaginative design solution.

As Ben Koralek, director of 'shape' and Creative Spaces mentor, said:
"To be successful in this national competition would be a fantastic acknowledgement of the students’ inspiring dedication to this project. For some, it might also be the beginning of a career in construction, engineering or architecture."
In fact 63% of the students involved said that they had become more interested in a career in architecture, engineering or construction and ALL the students said that the workshops had helped them to understand the roles of the professionals involved in designing the built environment.
