Building for Life for Members was the third in our four seminar series of events designed specifically for Councillors in the Eastern region involved in the delivery of places and the improvement of design quality.
This extremely active half-day seminar was funded by Improvement East and held in the beautiful surroundings of Homerton College, Cambridge.
The day began with a well-used networking lunch, giving Councillors an opportunity to catch up and discuss their concerns and events since the last seminar.
A n extremely useful introduction to the CABE Building for Life criteria and scoring system was then given by CABE Enabler Stephanie Al-Wahid and Anne Woods, Senior Enabling Programme Officer at CABE, allowing delegates to either refresh their knowledge of these criteria or to learn about this for the first time.
Armed with the Building for Life marking texts, delegates were then taken on a walking tour of the Gold Awarded Development of Accordia Living, allowing many to see this development for the first time and to practice the task of objectiveassessment set out by Building for Life. Delegates were able to present any questions about the development to Shape East Director, Delyth Turner-Harriss.
On return to Homerton, the Councillors were then asked to individually assess the standard they felt Accordia deserved, with an exciting and thought-provoking discussion of the range of outcomes then ensuing. A final question and answer session with Stephane Al-Wahid and Anne Woods finally allowed Councillors to discuss more fully the reason for their range of marks, focusing in particular on the difficulty but importance of the non-subjectivity of this marking criteria and how to use this for full benefit within their various local authority roles. |
