SHAPE EAST EVENTS

Reclaiming the Public Realm in Historic Towns

April 23rd, 10am - 4pm,
The Old Town Hall Theatre, Hemel Hempstead

"With the help of senior councillors and the highway authority I will apply what I have learnt today"

Historic Hemel Hempstead provided the venue for the first of this year’s Shape East organised English Heritage seminars, attended by Design and Heritage Champions, Councillors, Senior Planning Officers and Historic Environment Officers. Twenty two different Local Authorities throughout the region were represented.

This one-day seminar opened with an Introduction to Streets For All and the Principles of Good Practice by Michael Munt, Historic Areas Advisor for English Heritage. CABE Space Scholarship winner Ian Poole then took delegates on a wonderful visual tour of his 35 day European trip, looking at the management and maintenance of streets and squares in historic towns and cities across the continent.

Delegates were also enthused by the focus of Sarah Rubenstein’s presentation, as she explored the current Shared Space concept for the Exhibition Road area of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, as well as the historic streets of Downham Market Town Centre.

After an extended question and answer session and a well-used networking lunch, delegates listened to regional case studies from Norwich and Peterborough, in addition to informative discussion surveying the approaches to street scene design and maintenance of Lincoln.

Feedback :

"The case studies were extremely helpful, a most enjoyable event"

"The event was packed with most interesting highway ideas"

"With the help of senior councillors and the highway authority I will apply what I have learnt today"
