The Making Neighbourhoods workshop at Milton Road Junior School explored the links between the school neighbourhood and the new one being created at the nearby Arbury Park development, an urban extension between the North East of Cambridge and the A14. Many of the children had seen the huge development site but knew little of its plans, to include over 900 new homes and facilities.
The workshop was attended by the landscape architect and urban designer for the Arbury Park development and gave children the opportunity to look at the role our professional volunteers had taken in the design of Arbury Park. They explored what facilities could be found in their own local neighbourhoods and what would be provided in the new neighbourhood of Arbury Park and thought about how they might benefit from those facilities.
Children made models of a range of facilities designed by them and were given guidelines to consider, including spaces around the buildings, design, function, transport, roads and access.
50 parents, the lead developer and Council Members attended the presentation event when the children presented their models of facilities for Arbury and placed them on the huge map of the area. They discussed where the facilities should be put and what was important about their location.
A short presentation was also given regarding the new facilities being provided on the development site, which would interest both parents and children.
