 The Year at a Glance

Shape East has had a very busy year and has completed more events and met more people than ever before. We thought you might like to be reminded of some highlights of 2008-9.

Professionals and Local Authorities
ely masterplan Ely Masterplanning Workshops and Exhibition
Shape East and Beacon Planning worked together to help East Cambridgeshire District Council develop three visions for the future of Ely. The conclusions formed the basis of an exhibition for public consultation.

“I have participated in 2 of the 3 Ely masterplanning workshops...and...have been most impressed with the organisation and facilitation of the events.”
zerocarbon
Future Gazing: What are Zero Carbon Communities?
Over 80 professionals, academics and Members joined us to explore policy change and practical ways to approach sustainability within the context of the growth agenda.

"All the information was very useful; all food for thought, and action more importantly!"
norwichchurch New (Secular) Uses for Old Churches
This free one day seminar provided an important opportunity to explore how and why churches become redundant and the impact of this on the building's future. It was attended by over 50 delegates and provided a tour of Norwich churches following the day's talks.

"I have learnt to be open minded about internal space and change"
thetfordbic Building in Context: Thetford
This fourth building in context seminar for Design and Heritage Champions, local authority Members and officers focused on the proposed bus station and riverside development to explore ways of delivering better designed and more sustainable developments.

"I think this training highlighted important issues relevant to development of these sites which have not received adequate consideration to date"

Changing Places
This project, carried out between April and August 2008, saw young people from Peterborough and Cambridge explore the hidden meanings encapsulated in their familiar local environment and record their memories, feelings and hopes for the future. The project incorporated 6 diverse events, attended by a total of 106 young people (and 146 adults). As well as assisting to develop a sense of place it gave the young people an opportunity to talk to decision makers about change in their locality.

The Home Run
Peterborough's suburbs provided a backdrop for the biggest running event in the East of England. Shape put together an artist/architect team and worked with local communities to design a celebratory landmark along the Great Eastern running route, as part of the official Cultural Olympiad. This was seen by over 3700 visitors.
 Visitors and The General Public
rural tour Shape Tours
This year Shape completed a series of tours with experts helping to give attendees insights into the buildings' structure and design. These included tours as varied as the Flagship Housing Association's eco "Hobbit Home" at Honningham, contemporary award-winning Accordia in Cambridge, to the interaction of old and new in Southwold and the sustainable redevelopment of the Grade 1 listed medieval Dragon Hall, Norwich.
norfolkopenhouse Norfolk Open House
Shape East supported the Campaign for Rural England’s (CPRE) initiative to open up ‘green’ buildings throughout Norfolk. Visits were free and included 15 properties, all of which have eco-features:- such as solar panels, ground source heat pumps, wind turbines, rainwater harvesting or hydro-turbines.

ShapeEXPLORE: New Tours Launched

This year Shape East has been commissioned to produce a number of diverse and exciting new public tours, which will soon be available free to download:

Funded by Cambridge City Council, our Sustainability Tour of the city guides the visitor through the historic city centre, tracing our and previous generations adaptations to the environment. We focus in particular on the current climate change challenge and how we may learn from the city's heritage to develop news (and old) ways to tackle this pressing issue.

A CABE funded tour of the award winning Accordia housing development provides an indepth architectural focus for professionals, students or interested parties. This tour will be available both as an audio and written tour. We can also arrange a personal guided tour to groups of 10 or more.
