'Changing Places'

FilmingYoung People from Peterborough and Cambridge took part in ‘Changing Places’ one of Shape’s future heritage projects. Participants explored the hidden meanings encapsulated in their familiar local environment, and recorded their memories, feelings and hopes for the future. The project brought together new and existing communities to share their histories and explore the places they live. The young people involved took the lead on the project, and with filmmaker Sarah Gibson Yates, they learnt new skills through researching, planning and producing a series of short films.

Mapping PlacesThis project was devised by Shape East in partnership with Cambridge City Council's Children and Young People Participation Service and Peterborough City Council's Youth Services Team and Neighbourhood Investment Team. It was funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Young Roots scheme and CABE the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

Mapping Places'its been a great project that has engaged and motivated some of our most challenging students. I thought the organisation was brilliant and the way all of you related to the students was fantastic. I think all the students involved gained much from it.' —Keith Morris, Teacher, Bushfield Community College

'This project has been immensely valuable. Not only have young people been asked their opinion on a hugely important subject and one which relates so heavily on their day to day lives, but they have been allowed to express these opinions in a refreshingly novel way which is accessible to all.' —Kathie Longbone, Peterborough City Council Neighbourhood Investment Team

On locationThe films were premiered at The John Clare Theatre, Peterborough Central Library on Thursday 11 September 2008. Four of the finished films can be viewed below. If you are unable to view the films visit the Shape East youtube page to see them.
